Application Spotlight: Vacuum Distillation - Using Precise Vacuum Control

Application Spotlight: Vacuum Distillation

  • vacuum distillation graph

Nearly everyone is familiar with how whiskey, vodka, and other distilled spirits are made. Because water and alcohol have different boiling temperatures, alcohol boils off earlier than water, allowing the alcohol to be collected.

But what happens if you need to separate two delicate compounds that are heat sensitive? This happens frequently in the manufacturing of chemicals or pharmaceuticals with long chain molecules or polymers. Often, the best solution is to lower the boiling temperature by reducing the pressure over the liquids. This process requires a precisely controlled vacuum pressure to be applied.

Equilibar vacuum regulators are an ideal fit to control the pressure in vacuum distillation applications because:

  • Their high accuracy and resolution allow precise separation of chemicals with similar boiling points
  • Stainless and PTFE wetted parts can be in direct contact with corrosive chemistries
  • High temperature ratings allow mounting close to the separation vessel
  • They are able to handle liquids, gasses, and mixtures equally well

Our engineers have a great deal of experience working with the unique challenges of vacuum distillation. We invite you to contact one of them to see if an Equilibar vacuum regulator is right for your application.

Journal article focuses on oligonucleotide production using pressure control with built in dampener

Oligonucleotide drugs are made up of short sections of genetic sequences and are used to target disorders in the genetic code. The first drug of this type was used in 1998 during the AIDS epidemic.  Since then, the field has accelerated rapidly and today many oligonucleotide drugs are in clinical trials, promising improvements in treatment Read More
